The history of aikido is a shorter one than that of most Asian martial arts. Honed and developed in the 1920's and 30's in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba, aikido martial arts reflect a synthesis of combat and philosophical and religious beliefs. The core tenet of aikido is to take the motion of one's attacker and redirect their attack, rather than challenging it with strength. Many aikido techniques are similar to Judo or Jiu-Jitsu, using throws and joint locks to subdue and finish an opponent. As the students of aikido emigrated from Japan, the art itself began to spread as well.
Differing from standard aikido is aikido ki (or ki-aikido). This is an offshoot of standard aikido from a former student who did not get along with the son of the original creator of aikido. This led to a split within the overall sport, since most schools now needed to choose one specific style or the other.
Anyone wanting to learn aikido will need to visit an aikido dojo or aikido center for lessons. There, they will be led in lessons into the two pre-arranged forms (or kata) that are used in aikido. The two halves blend together to deliver the power and motion needed to compete. Anyone learning aikido is going to develop faster reactions, explosive strength and flexibility, as well as a better cardio fitness level. Aikido practitioners wear an aikido gi, with reinforced knees and shorter sleeves to allow for easier wrist grabs.
All types of aikido classes are offered through ClassClassifieds, including children’s aikido classes, women’s aikido classes, and men’s aikido classes.
Another great way to learn aikido is by joining an aikido club or by attending an aikido camp (perhaps an aikido summer camp?), which you can find on ClassClassifieds!

Aikido lessons offered through teachers on ClassClassifieds are typically with a private aikido instructor or at an aikido academy, although online aikido classes may be available. What are you waiting for? Take an aikido class and learn how to do aikido today!
