Break dancing is a well-known street dance style which first appeared in New York City during the early 1970's. Media popularity, and an affiliation with the increasingly popular hip hop music style, led to it exploding beyond the borders of that origin, and today many people aspire to become great at breakdancing.

Unique among dance styles for the acrobatic moves common among high level break dancers (or B-Boys), break dancing can be performed to any type of music with a good, consistent beat. It began as an offshoot to the break beat music styles of 70's DJ's such as Kool Herc (hence the name breakdance), but anything with a quick beat will work. There are four basic styles which fall under the break dance label: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes.

All of the various styles require more physical strength than most other types of dance. This doesn't mean that a prospective B-boy need be overly muscular, but enough strength to maneuver oneself properly with arms and legs is necessary. The unique nature of the style also means that it can be quite an undertaking to learn beyond the very basics. A break dance class will begin by teaching basic movements which not only form the basis of more complex steps, but also allow a new dancer to build the sort of power to properly execute higher-level steps.

Break dance lessons offered through break dance instructors on ClassClassifieds are typically private break dance lessons, group break dance lessons (perhaps at a break dance school), or online break dance lessons.
