The dulcimer, a more obscure instrument, is part of the string family and is known for the beautiful, simple music it makes. The dulcimer consists of strings threaded over a trapezoid shaped board, which create the sound. The player strikes the strings with hammers to create the melody. Use of the dulcimer is more common in the Middle East and Asian countries, but can be found in folk music in both the U.S. and Great Britain. The dulcimer found in the U.S. has a unique “figure 8” type shape, usually has 3 or four strings, and is often referred to as the “mountain dulcimer” because of its widespread use in the Appalachian Mountains. Students of the dulcimer may learn a variety of different playing styles, including noter & drone style, finger dancing style, and strumming. The dulcimer is also considered one of the easiest instruments to play and beginners will pick up on playing fairly quickly. Learners do not need prior experience reading music to be able to play this beautiful instrument either. However, like playing any instrument, a level of diligence and regular practice is necessary. Many students also find that taking dulcimer lessons can help you grasp playing the dulcimer even more quickly than if you were to learn by yourself.
