Improvisational theatre, or improv for short, is a kind of performance generated at the spur of the moment. In other words, the performers are creating the characters, the plot and the dialogue as they perform it, with very little or none of it rehearsed or planned out beforehand. Most improv also involves some audience participation in terms of allowing those in attendance to supply the basic starting information for the group. For example, someone at the show might shout out what becomes the basic plot point for the group's next skit. The history of improv theatre in the West dates all the way back to Rome in 391 BC. Modern improv theatre sprang to the fore in 1916, as the sort of creativity inherent in improvisation became something coveted in many walks of life. This led to it becoming a bigger part of theatrical and other types of courses.

Anyone who wants to learn improv absolutely needs a creative mind. You need to be able to come up with and process ideas on a moment by moment basis. You need to be able to take the reins and steer a scene in a certain direction, but be equally comfortable following another person's start and moving further down a path that they have begun. Obviously, a confidence of performance is needed if someone is going to be able to pull this off, as is a good stage presence and confidence on the stage. Finally, since most improv is performed on a stage without the use of microphones, a strong voice that can be effectively projected out to an audience is helpful.

Improv lessons offered through teachers on ClassClassifieds are typically with a private improv teacher or at an improv school, although online improv lessons may be available. What are you waiting for? Take an improv class and learn how to do improv today!
