The history of judo is found in Japan. Created in 1882, it's a relatively modern martial art known primarily for throws and takedowns. Judo offers a combination of ground-fighting techniques found in other fighting sports, with a similar pinning style to wrestling. In fact, it has enough similarities to sometimes be referred to off-hand as judo wrestling. The joint-locks and submissions found in jiu-jitsu are also common here, which isn't surprising as that sport had its start in judo.
Judo techniques involve using leverage and technique to overcome size. Thus, a practitioner of judo will use an opponent's own momentum against him, using that to put him on the ground with a toss or throw. This focus on technique has made judo one of the most effective martial arts for women to learn, and many female judo fighters have met with some of the earliest success in women's mixed martial arts.
Judo martial arts are learned at a dojo, under the learned eyes of a sensei. Each practitioner of the art is known as a judoka, and will wear a judo ji or judoji while practicing his or her forms. Judo belts function in much the same way as the ranked belts system of most other martial arts. Judo is one of the martial arts which is competed at a global level, meaning most countries have a judo team for international and Olympic competition. American Judo is one such organization, built around helping to spread judo training, and to also foster national meets and tournaments from which the cream of the crop can be found for international tournaments. Master Judo also exists for those aged 30 and over, and who have reached certain levels of qualification.
All types of judo classes are offered through ClassClassifieds, including children’s judo classes, women’s judo classes, and men’s judo classes.
