Kickboxing refers to a series of different martial arts styles, all developed from karate, muay thai and Western boxing. The history of kickboxing differs for the two main schools, with the Japanese variant starting up in the 1960's, and the American version originating a decade later. As a result of this split, there is no unified body or style for kickboxing martial arts, with things spread out more than in many other traditional martial arts styles.
Though the word kickboxing can act as a generic description for all stand-up combat sports that allow hand and foot strikes, it usually refers to the Japanese and American styles specifically. American kickboxing allows full contact rules, mixing boxing and karate. Practitioners wear trousers and protective gear while throwing hand strikes with 10 oz boxing gloves on their hands. International, or freestyle, rules allow low kicks, and martial artists may also wear shorts. Japanese kickboxing also allows knee strikes and low kicks, as well as limited clinch fighting. The shoot boxing variant also brings standing submissions in to the mix. Different kickboxing gyms teach different techniques, so prospective students are advised to do their research.
Kickboxing for fitness has also become immensely popular in recent years for those looking for something different from the usual aerobic routines. These use varieties of kickboxing exercises, often based on full contact moves, to give students a workout. These won't teach any sort of real striking, but instead deliver a kickboxing workout that will beef up the class's cardio level and fitness. These are also at times referred to as kickboxing cardio classes.
