The history of the sitar is long and distinguished. Originating in India and Central Asia, it began to attain prominence in the 16th Century in larger areas of both Asia and Europe. However, it didn't reach a level of awareness for mainstream Westerners until artists such as Ravi Shankar began using them in their compositions in the 1950s.

A sitar can have as many as 20 strings, with most models having strings numbering in the high teens. Six or seven are played over curved frets, while the remainder actually run beneath the frets and resonate when the 'standard' strings are played. All of the strings can be moved and shifted, meaning the sitar has a better capability for customization than most other stringed instruments. Gayaki style sitars are more in the traditional style, while instrumental sitars feature a second resonator in the neck and typically more elaborate decoration.

Learning to play the sitar will likely come easier for anyone with experience in guitars or other stringed instruments, though there is a substantial difference. For anyone who is new to playing this sort of instrument, the learning curve will be quite steep. Finger flexibility and the ability to properly hear and interpret notes are keys for anyone wanting to learn to play a sitar.

All types of sitar lessons are offered through ClassClassifieds, including children’s sitar lessons and adult sitar lessons.
