The history of skiing begins in Norway and Sweden, where evidence of snow skiing dating back to about 5000 BC has been discovered. Many years later, in 1861 in Australia, the first recreational ski club was established. There are several types of skiing, including snow skiing and water skiing, both of which are known to be exciting, daredevil sports. Snow skiing is an Olympic winter sport and is divided into two categories, alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. Both consist of wearing skis and utilizing poles to go across snow. Snow skiing is very common in colder temperatures and those who do not have access to snow will often travel to snowy areas to be able to ski for recreation. Water skiing involves using similar skis for gliding on water while being pulled by a boat. Water skiing is a common recreation activity both in lakes and the ocean. It is important in both snow skiing and water skiing to have good balance, have good movement rhythm, be daring, and be able to control both right and left skis. Skiing is not very difficult, but like any sport, takes lots of practice and perseverance. The best way to learn both water skiing and snow skiing is by taking snow ski lessons, including cross-country ski lessons, or water ski lessons. Once you take a ski lesson, you will be a master skier having lots of fun!
