The tabla, while not as familiar to Western music, is a Hindustani percussion instrument mainly used in the Indian subcontinent’s classical music. The tabla is played by the fingers and palms in different configurations on the membrane of the drum. It is traditional belief that the tabla was invented by the Sufi poet Amir Khusro in the 13th century and complemented the sitar that was used for chanting practices. The tabla actually consists of two drums, one larger and the other smaller. Indian music, including that for the tabla, is traditionally practice centered and formal notations of music were not typically written down. Different strokes of this percussion instrument have different names. Some of the strokes are ta, ghe, tin, and dha, each with their own movement and sound associated with them. Learning to play the tabla was traditionally passed from guru to the student, in Hindi, shishya. The tabla is not a very difficult instrument to learn, but like any musical instrument, it takes lots of practice and diligence to master. Following the Indian tradition of learning from a tabla master can be achieved through taking lessons from an experienced tabla teacher either online or in person. Mastering this beautiful traditional instrument can be a rewarding experience, so let us help you get started!
