Volleyball pits two teams of six players each against each other, with one team on each side of a net. Teams have to score points by having the ball hit the ground within the opponent's court. The history of volleyball originates in 1895 in Massachusetts, when a YMCA physical education director was looking for a new indoor game option for periods of bad weather outside. As basketball was also facing the same beginnings at this time, this was seen as an alternative game that could be played on the same court surface. The first foreign nation to participate was Canada, beginning in 1900.
By 1916, more of the modern-style rules had begun to appear. By the late 1940's, the game had grown out in to parts of South America and Europe. Today, it is popular in several different versions around the world. Beach volleyball is popular in warm climates, and was added to the Summer Olympics in 1996. Standard court-style volleyball has been an Olympic sport since 1964.
Volleyball skills include being able to play the ball via bumping, setting and spiking, and volleyball players will play a specific role on a team based on their strengths in the game. A typical volleyball team has a roster of specialties, with certain players there to set up finishers, others who excel at serving the ball, and so forth.
Volleyball leagues are fairly common these days for people to join, and players will certainly see an improvement in their co-ordination and fitness level as a whole.
